March 4, 2024 – Public Hearing

On Monday, March 4th, City Council held a Public Hearing. Here is the agenda packet: https://livoniami.portal.civicclerk.com/event/484/files

A reminder that Public Hearings are not streamed or recorded and VRS does not summarize public comments.

The first agenda item related to a zoning request for the construction of Sheetz was tabled at the petitioner’s request.

The second item is a special use request by New Oakland Family Centers. The mental health organization owns three parcels of land on 5 Mile just west of Middlebelt. Adjacent to their main center are two former office buildings they would like to convert into short-term (less than 72 hour) domiciliary spaces for teens (up to 5 boys and 7 girls). New Oakland maintains that the needs of the teens admitted would not be a threat to themselves or others, there would be no after-hour admits, and most of the individuals utilizing the space would be current patients.

The Planning Commission denied this request at their January 16th meeting identifying six specific reasons. Most notable is that the site was developed and intended for office purposes and not short-term residential. Further, the Livonia Police Department opposes the proposed use, and the proposal would not be in harmony with the surrounding uses in the area (this building is located within 15ft of a residential property).

City Council moved forward with approving and denying motions that will be acted upon at the Monday, March 11th regular meeting.
