July 12, 2021 – City Council Meeting

General Meeting

An edit was made to the minutes and the consent agenda was approved.

Public comments are a very important part of City Council meetings. When residents take time to attend meetings, they tend to speak on personal matters. For that reason, I generally keep them out of these summary posts. I do think it’s important that we listen to our fellow residents and if you have time, watching the first 30 minutes of Council meetings can help you learn more about what’s happening in our community. Tonight issues that were brought to council included: issues with commission, concerns with Senior Center programs, tree removal/replacement, trash collection and more.

There was a Committee of the Whole meeting on June 16th where the issue of residential blight and enforcement was discussed with members of Council, the City and Wayne County. There are two ordinances that were approved for a language write up by the law department that allows city inspectors to issue civil infractions and adjusts the fees for violations. These issues will continue to be discussed as it is a multi-step process.

The area west of Newburgh on Plymouth Rd was rezoned from business to condos.

City Council candidate Scott Morgan was appointed to the Zoning Board of Appeals. Representatives of the ZBA are appointed by members of council and Mr. Morgan is Councilwoman White appointee. Greggory Coppola was re-appointed by Council Donovic.

The issue of abandoned shopping carts in parking lots is going to the Public Safety, Health and Environment Committee for further discussion.

The Study Meeting session previews what you can expect to hear more about in future Regular Meetings.

Police Chief Caid introduced the new social worker who will begin in a couple months. Caitlin Witt is a Livonia resident with 10 years of experience including time at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Upcoming Events:

  • Compton Village will host a party at Dooley Park on Saturday, August 7th from 12pm to 10pm. There will be multiple bands for all ages and bounce houses for kids
  • Knights of Columbus will host a car show with DJ at St. Collette’s on Saturday, August 7th
  • Anastasia and Katie’s Coffee is hosting several events – THIS Thursday, July 15th a Community Social from 5pm to 8pm. Monday, August 16th is the annual golf outing at Idyl Wyld Golf Course. Saturday, August 28th from 11am to 2:30pm they are hosting a car show (which was the item for approval)

Chief Caid spoke in support of Livonia Police Department remaining members of the Oakland County Court and Law Enforcement Management Information System (CLEMIS). Livonia is currently a voting member and this was put on the consent agenda. A tie-in to the regular meeting, city inspectors would want to have access to this service to write citations.

Approval of the Senior Alliance 2022 Annual Implementation Plan (AIP) was also put on the consent agenda. You can read the drafted proposal here: https://thesenioralliance.org/…/Draft-2022-Annual…

Issues related to tax collection (by schools and government entities) cannot be challenged by Council and routine business will take place at the next council meeting.

Development News: Improvement bonds were requested for the developers of the new housing development projects at Grand Reserve and Lyndon Park. Links below to both projects.

Starting today and for 10 weeks the 5 Mile bridge over 275 is closed for construction.
