District Update from the Superintendent:

Superintendent Oquist appealed highlights from across the District, including learning experience such as Project Lead the Way Class at Riley, Community Partners hosting Garfield Community School Students at job sites, students in Copper’s remodeled LMC and Idea Factory, Yellow Day parade at Jackson ECC, and Open Houses / Curriculum Nights; Professional Learning Teams, New Elementary Teacher PD; LCTC renovations; new Uniforms for Churchill Volleyball; Fall Sports is in full swing – Stevenson Football played at the Big House, Stevenson hosted the first annual Marching Band Showcase with all 3 High Schools; Positive Behavior Camps at Cooper; Congratulations to Bethe Warrick who was appointed Student Services Coordinator and Lauren Feigel was appointed as the new Principal at Garfield Community School on Sept 18, and Nicole Collins was appointed as the new Assistant Principal at Franklin on 9/11; Mrs. Swierb at Cooper won $5000 for her class from Channel 955; Lillian Riney (FHS and LCTC class of 2023) was hired as a Cadet with the Wixom Police Department; Churchill Football team presented LPS Bus Driver Cheryl Caskey with a game ball for her efforts to get everyone back safety during a storm; Franklin launched their Athletics Hall of Fame; Churchill Pom performed at Comerica; Stevenson Girls Golf are City Champs and Churchill Girls Golf are the KLAA East Division Champs; Models of Integrity program at Grant; Lego League at Elementary Schools have started their season; Peer Link program at Frost; LCTC Open House and Tour of the renovations; Lions’ Roary visited Johnson; Purposeful Visit – Mrs Oquist and Cabinet Team members will visit classrooms during the year and an example from Mr. Barker History class at Stevenson was highlighted; 2023 M-Step Results – proficiency improved for ELA for 4 grades (5,6,7,11), Math for 7 grades (3,5,6,7,8,11), Social Studies for all 3 grades (5,8,11), and Science for 5th grade, overall LPS was in the top 20 for the Tri-County area for 15 of 20 areas, and all areas are above the state average; Summer Bond work was highlighted with examples of the renovations at Cleveland, Rosedale, Riley, Frost, and Franklin; LPS Education Foundation annual Luncheon will be on Nov. 1, Portraits on the Porch is Oct. 14 at Greenmead;

Audience Communications:

  • 4 Parents from (Niji-Iro spoke about concerns with the bulling and other policies. A bus driver talked about safety and what can be done to improve it.

Purchase of Bulk Salt:

  • Phil Francis (Assistant Superintendent of District Services) reviewed the background, and the Board approved the purchase of bulk road salt from the Detroit Salt Company, through the State of Michigan MiDEAL Extended Purchasing Program. This purchase will provide necessary materials for parking lot and sidewalk winter maintenance. This purchase will be paid from the General Fund.

HVAC Equipment for 2024 Projects (2021 Bond):

  • Phil Francis reviewed the background, and the Board approved the recommendation to purchase HVAC Equipment from Thermalnetics. This approval will allow the manufacturer to begin the production of this equipment, as these units have a long lead time. The HVAC equipment is part of the planned summer of 2024 Bond renovations.

Outfall Repairs at Stevenson High School (Sinking Fund):

  • Phil Francis reviewed the background, and the Board approved TSP Services, Inc., for the outfall repair work at Stevenson. The drain outfall (bordering the Francavilla sub) has had a significant soil erosion; the area is meant to shed water to the nearby creek, which is part of the Wayne County water management system. The area needs to be built back up with soil and stones to help guide the water properly and to protect the pipe.

Approval of Creative Curriculum Materials:

  • Theresa O’Brien (Chief Academic Officer) reviewed the background, and the Board approved the purchase of Creative Curriculum Cloud from Teaching Strategies, which includes curriculum for infants, toddlers and two-year olds. This purchase includes online use of Creative Curriculum Cloud for three years and is a continuation of the curriculum purchased in 2021. This purchase will be paid from the General Fund.

Personnel Matters:

The Board approved / recognized new Hires, Tenure, Resignations, and Retirements.

Alison Smith, Chief Financial Officer, reviewed the background and changes for the first reading of Board Policies related to Fiscal Management: Policy DIA – Account System, Policy DIB – Financial Reports and Statements, and Policy DJCA – Payday Schedules.

Voting Delegates – 2023 MASB Delegate Assembly

The Board approved Tammy Bonifield, Karen Bradford, Colleen Burton, and Mark Johnson as voting delegates and Madeline Acosta, Crystal Frank, and Liz Jarvis as alternates for the

MASB Delegate Assembly in Lansing, Michigan, on November 9, 2023.

The Board took time to honor Jill Wozniak (Executive Assistant, to the Superintendent & BOE) as this is her last meeting before she retires.
