District Update from the Superintendent:
- Superintendent Oquist appealed highlights from across the District, including Welcome New Staff – Staff Signing Day; congratulations to new leaders – Bruce Rivera as the new Principal at Emerson, Lindsay Gray as the new Principal at the LCTC, and Maegan Sprow as the new Director of Student Services; Administrative Retreat; Summer Learning Fun – Summer Activity Club, L-Town Camps, Summer School, and Credit Recovery; Fall Sports has started – Franklin Boys Tennis had 6 medalists at the Dearborn Muldowney/Snell Tournament, the 3rd Annual Lamplighter Cross Country race at Ford Field (1000 runners from across the State), Churchill Boys Tennis won the Bedford Invitational, Unified Sports Camp, High School Marching Band Camps; Bond work- LMC renovations at Franklin, Riley, Cleveland, and Frost, Early Childhood Center, LCTC expansion; reminders for Bounce Back to School LPS Education Foundation, Battle at the Big House (Stevenson vs. Lake Orion on 8/24), Touch a Truck 8/26, and School starts 8/28

- 2 Parents spoke about concerns at Niji-Iro with policy and busing.
Adoption of 2023-24 Bylaws to Establish Meeting Dates and Other Procedures:
- The Board approved to adopt and establish the 2023-2024 Board meeting dates, procedures for the calling and posting of Board meetings, and authorization to sign contracts and legal documents for the Board. This is necessary to be in compliance with the Open Meetings Act.
Designation of 2023-24 Bank Depositories:
- The Board approved to designate JPMorgan Chase Bank and Michigan Liquid Asset Fund Plus as depositories for the School District during the 2023-24 school year. This is necessary per the Revised School Code MCL 380.1221.
Appointment of Investment Officer:
- The Board approved to appoint Alison Smith (Director of Finance), as the Investment Officer in conjunction with the District’s Investment Policy for the 2023-2024 school year.
Appointment of Staff Member to be in Charge of Elections:
- The Board approved Phillip Francis (Assistant Superintendent of District Services) as the staff member in charge of school elections for the 2023-2024 school year.
Appointment of Staff Member to be Responsible for Posting Board Meeting Notices:
- The Board approved the appointment of the Superintendent as the administrator in charge of posting meeting notices.
Purchase of Buses (2021 Bond):
- The Board approved the purchase of 5 school buses from Holland Bus Company, Holland, Michigan.
Purchase of Bus Cameras (2021 Bond):
- The Board approved the purchase and installation of bus cameras from REI, Omaha, Nebraska. This purchase from the technology budget of the 2021 bond fund will complete the cameras needed to outfit all buses in our current school bus fleet.
Purchase of Doors and Hardware (2021 Bond):
- The Board approved the recommendation from the Owner’s Representative, Plante Moran Cresa, for the purchase of doors and hardware replacement from Wally Kosorski Co. LLC, Clinton Twp, Michigan.
Purchase of Apple Technology Products for Student Services:
- The Board approved the purchase of iPads, iPad cases, software and warranties from Apple for the ASD and MOCI programs. Funding for this purchase will come from the RESA Act 18 Technology/Equipment Replacement Plan.
Grades 5-6 Social Studies Textbook Adoption:
- The Board approved the purchase of six years of digital access and classroom textbooks: Social Studies Alive! America’s Past for fifth grade and Geography Alive! Regions and People for sixth grade, from TCI. This textbook was evaluated using the district textbook adoption process. The funding for this purchase will come from the Academic Services Department Secondary Textbook Fund, which is supported by the Wayne County Enhancement Millage.
Purchase of Social Emotional Learning Curriculum:
- The Board approved the purchase of Social Emotional Learning Curriculum from Center for the Collaborative Classroom for K-6 classrooms. This purchase will provide access to social emotional learning curriculum for students’ daily use in all K-6 schools. This will complete the process of equipping all schools with the curriculum, as some materials were purchased in the 2022-2023 school year. The funding for this purchase will come from the general Special Education budget.
Purchase of Project Lead the Way Materials:
- The Board approved the purchase of materials from Project Lead the Way for the 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 school year. This purchase provides material for all students in our K-6 schools. This will complete the process of equipping all schools with PLTW materials, as three of our schools piloted the program during the 2022-23 school year.
Personnel Matters:
- The Board approved / recognized new Hires, Tenure, Resignations, Layoffs, Recalls, and Retirements. The Board also took time to honor Jill Wozniak (Executive Assistant, to the Superintendent & BOE).
Board Members to Take MASB Classes and Attend Annual Leadership Conference:
- The Board approved that Board Trustees may participate in the November 9-12, 2023, MASB Annual Leadership Conference in Lansing.
The Board also approved the Tuition Rate for 2023-24, Purchase of Copy Paper, Food Service Purchases, and Purchase of i-Ready Instructional and Diagnostic Licenses.
