Livonia Q3 2023 Highlights

Our goal at Vote.Run.Serve – Livonia is to not only share information as it happens but to keep the conversation going. We know everyone is busy so we hope that our recaps help residents feel connected to Livonia and our local government.

Here’s are some things to remember from the third quarter:

Annual City Audit – The City of Livonia is fiscally sound. Item noted for future consideration are the Court Building Improvement Fund (court revenue will not cover costs and $200k – $300k will need to be icluded in future general fund budget to cover cost), legacy costs and the city’s post employment healthcare system (VEBA) are stable but required City contribution of $7.6M (5/31)

2023 Filing Deadling The filing deadline for the November 7th election passed with 2 candidates for Mayor (Maureen Miller Brosnan and Kathleen McIntyre), Clerk (Lori Miller and Lynda Scheel) and Treasurer (Andrew Lendrum and Susan Nash). There are 6 candidates for City Council (Jim Baringhaus, Carrie Budzinski, Robb Drzewicki, Brandon McCullough, Scott Morgan and Martha Ptashnik) and 4 seats. There will be no primary. (4/25)

Livonia Senior Center – The current Senior Center will receive a new roof (6/5). The Michigan state legislature budget allocated $4.5M to the proposed Senior Center (6/30). The city is seeking funds from the county to move forward with the poject.

Development Updates: St. Mary’s tabled its request for multi-family housing and a hearing will be held on July 25th (5/12). The former Steak N Shake location was approved as a Dairy Queen (5/22). A new hotel as approved for 31501 Schoolcraft (6/5)

Referred to Committee – The following topics were discussed in committee: Livonia Community Transit was discussed at the Senior Citizens, Families and Environment Committee (4/19), subject matter of demolition of blighted residential and commercial properties was discussed at the Law and Education Committee (5/17), and deer population was discussed at the Public Safety and Health committee meeting (6/19).

Increased Water Rate– Water and sewer rate was increased by 4.96% and it is expected to result in a quarterly increase of $9.20 for most households. (6/26)

Appointments – Candy Little was appointed to fill Joan Gebhardt’s vacated seat as a Schoolcraft Trustee (4/20)
