1) Public Hearing:
A parent spoke in support of the proposed budget for the 2023/24 School Year for including expansion of Project Lead the Way and thanked Dr. Taiariol for her efforts and support over the years.
Budget & Millage Rates:
Alison Smith (Director of Finance) reviewed the proposed budget for the 2023/24 School Year and the Millage rates for the upcoming tax year (will be the same as last year).
2) Regular Meeting:
Recognition of LPS Robotics Sponsors and Acceptance of Gifts:
Stacy Jenkins (Administrator for District Communications) and Isolina Carlini (Robotics Coordinator) recognized the donations to the LPS FIRST Robotics Teams for the 2021-2022 school year; Aisin Technical Center of America, Inc. – $10,000, Bosch Engineering North America – $8,000, Roush Management LLC – $5,000, ZF (TRW Automotive) – $4,000, Ford Motor Company – $3,000, 4M Industries, Inc. – $1,500, HM White LLC – $1,000, Operating Engineers, Inc. – $1,000, Parks Maintenance, Inc. – $1,000 in-kind donation, First in Michigan – grant donation, General Motors – Dollars for Doers Program and mentors, Siemens – in-kind donation (software / CAD computers), Schostak Brothers & Company, Inc. – In-kind donation (building use), TomPromo Marketing – in-kind donation (marketing brochures, etc.). The Board voted to accept the donations.
District Update from the Superintendent:
Superintendent Oquist appealed highlights from across the District, including highlights from all of the graduation ceremonies; End of the Year activities such as Cooper at the Detroit Zoo, Emerson at Cedar Point, Field Days and Color Runs, Garfield’s year end picnic and BBQ, Kindergarten Round-up; Robotics Teams have been out in the community with demos and volunteering; Ground Breaking for the new Early Childhood Center; Spring Sports – Churchill Softball made Regionals and several Track and Field members made States, Stevenson Boys Golf, Softball, Boys and Girls Lacrosse were KLAA Champs, Franklin Baseball were District Champs and went on to Regionals; LPS Education Foundation Golf Outing will be on 7/23, Unified Sports Camps are scheduled for 6/22, 7/20, and 8/17.
Audience Communications:
Several people (including parents, students, and a substitute Teacher) spoke about concerns with bullying.
Personnel Matters:
The Board approved / recognized new Hires, Tenure, Resignations, Layoffs, Recalls, and Retirements. The Board also took time to honor Jennifer Taiariol (Director of Student Services) who is leaving LPS to take a position at Wayne RESA as the Assistant Superintendent of Special Education and Early Intervention Services.
Approval of 2023-2024 Lease Renewals:
The Board approved the lease renewals for Garfield Cooperative Preschool, Himawari Preschool, The
Learning Tree, and Livonia Little Tots, effective July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024.
Purchase of Multi-Purpose Room Lighting (Sinking Fund):
The Board approved the bid from Great Lakes Power & Lighting, for lighting and electrical upgrades. The upgraded include the replacement of the current fluorescent lighting in the multi-purpose rooms (gymnasiums) at Cleveland, Coolidge, Grant, Hayes, Hoover, Kennedy, Roosevelt, and Rosedale.
High School Weight Room Renovations:
The Board approved Rogers Athletic and SPEC Athletic for renovations to the weight rooms at Churchill, Franklin, and Stevenson High Schools. The weight rooms at these schools are more than 20 years old and this renovation will update the space and provide new equipment for use by all students at the three high schools. This project will be paid from the General Fund
Adoption of 2023-2024 Proposed Budget and Millage Rates:
The Board approved the proposed budgets and the Millage Rates for the upcoming tax year.
Tendering of Prior Bonds:
The Board approved a resolution authorizing the district to offer to buy back outstanding bonds from investors at a premium to market value funded with refunding bond proceeds to achieve overall savings for taxpayers.
Establishment of Date for First Regular Board Meeting of 2023-24:
The Board approved that the first Regular Board meeting for the 2023-2024 school year will be held on August 21, 2023. It was noted that the first Study Session will be on July 31.
Board Members to Attend MASB 2023 Summer Institute:
The Board approved Trustees Madeline Acosta, Liz Jarvis, and Mark Johnson to take classes on August 8-11.
