Recognition of National Merit Scholars:

Stacy Jenkins (Administrator for District Communications) highlighted 4 LPS students (3- CHS and 1- FHS) that scored in the top 1% of ~1.6M students nationwide, on the PSAT National Merit Scholarship qualifying exam.

Appointment of Student Services Coordinators:

The Board approved the appointments of Nicole West and Caitlin VerMeer as student services coordinators.

Appointment of Assistant Principal at Churchill High School:

The Board approved the appointment of Todd Kalmbach as assistant principal at Churchill.

District Update from the Superintendent:

Superintendent Oquist appealed highlights from across the District, including learning activities at several schools including a students at Roosevelt participating in a “Talking Zoo”, CHS Advance Chem Class conducting experiments, V.I. Students visited Detroit Metro Airport, Spring Craft Show at the Skills Center, Chess Club at Riley, SHS Law and Justice Class mock trial, Nijij-Iro’s Matsuri Festival, Jackson Center first-ever 5-K Fun Run; Spring Sports – FHS 4×4 Relay Team was named All Conference, SHS Girls Tennis are City Champs, Both Boys and Girls United Lacrosse Teams are KLAA East Division Champs, FHS JV and Varsity Baseball are Division Champs, Unified Bocce; Elementary Robotics Teams had their first competition again 28 other schools; Staff Appreciation Week; Sport Officials Appreciation, 2 LPS Staff members were recognized at the Wayne County Excellence in Transportation Awards; Signing Day; SHS McKenzie Siroky was 1 of 12 statewide finalist for the Detroit Athletic Club Foundation HS Female Athlete of the Year; College Day at SHS; LPS Education Foundation Star Awards; CHS Softball Coach Vinitski recently reached his 100th win; Rotary Vocation Award winner Theresa Lilla (Advanced Graphic Design at the LCTC); 30year Service Awards; Evan Jenkins (FHS) won a Concerto Contest and performed a 10-min solo with the Dearborn Youth Symphony; Wayne County Parent Advisory Council honored the Unified Peers at CHS, FTP Graduation; HS Honors Night; PTSA Council Reflections; LPS Education Foundation Golf Outing is July 23th; and High School Graduation – FHS is Thu 6/1 at 7pm, SHS is Fri 6/2 at 7pm, CHS is Sun 6/4 at noon.

Audience Communications:

A SHS Student addressed the Board about the benefits and his appreciation of the Industrial Arts program. 2 LPS Parents spoke about and asked question about the future direction of the DEI Committee.

40 Year Resolution:

The Board approved a resolution of appreciation for Catherine Custard to recognize her 41 years of service with the District.

Personnel Matters:

The Board approved / recognized new Hires, Tenure, Resignations, Recalls, and Retirements.

MHSAA Membership Resolution for 2023-24

The Board approved a Membership Resolution of the Michigan High School Athletic Association for the 2023-24 school year.

Contingency for Robotics and LCTC Renovation (2021 Bond):

The Board approved additional contingency (7%  9%) for the Robotics and LCTC renovation project; the increase being requested to ensure no delays occur during the summer due to unforeseen construction issues.

Parking Lot Maintenance:

The Board approved the parking lot maintenance (filling the cracks and repainting lines) at Buchanan, Cass, Coolidge, Cooper, Garfield, Grant, Hayes, Hoover, Randolph, Roosevelt, Johnson, and Jackson. This will be paid from the General Fund.

Appointment of Auditor for 2022-23:

The Board approved the appoint of Plante Moran to audit and prepare the financial statements for the 2022-2023 school year (state law mandates an annual, outside financial audit).

Wayne RESA 2023-24 General Fund Operating Budget:

The Board approved a resolution to support the proposed General Fund Operating Budget for the 2023-2024 school year for the Wayne County Regional Educational Service Agency.

Garfield Greenhouse Change Order:

The Board approved additional funds for the Garfield Greenhouse project. This was necessary due to an installation change in contractors from what was quoted 2 years ago. The work is planned for this summer and will be paid using Act 18 funds.

Adoption of High School Psychology Textbooks:

The Board approved the purchase of Psychology In Your Life, 4th Edition digital access and class sets of physical textbooks for the Introduction to Psychology course. Funding is supported by the Wayne County Enhancement Millage.

Grades 3 and 4 Word Study Professional Development:

The Board approved the purchase of digital teacher resources and professional development vouchers for 100 teachers to attend a 30-hour training on Orton Gillingham Morphology, which was newly adopted word study curriculum for third and fourth grades.

Purchase of LCTC Furniture and Computers for Graphics Design/Digital Imaging Classroom:

The Board approved the purchase of items to update the LCTC Graphics Design/Digital Imaging classroom. The upgrade will include desks, chairs, iMac desktop computers, iPad Air Tablets, iPad accessories, Apple charging cart, and Apple Care+. The purchase will be funded through 61a Grant funds.

Expulsion of One Secondary Student:

The Board approved expulsion of two secondary students for violations policies.

Second Reading of Board Policy:

The Board approved the updates to IDF – Interscholastic Activities and Athletics & Removal of Board Policy IDFA – Interscholastic Athletics, and IFD – Library Media Centers and Classroom Libraries:

Wayne RESA Board Election – Designation of Representative:

The Board approved Trustee Jarvis as a Designation of Representative and Trustee Frank as an alternate.

Approval for Board Member to Take MASB Classes:

The Board approved Trustee Crystal Frank to take MASB classes.
